Q.    What is this page?

A.    This page is nothing more but a quick explanation of what we (me and a good friend) use to play extremely fast and powerful games

in yahoo chess rooms, using ytoics, winboard_x, polyglot, fritz, auto232d and a UCI engine (rybka in our case).

Q.    Who are we?

A.    We are just two guys that like to tinker and experiment with programs made by others. Our goal is to win as many games as

possible ( more specifically fast 1/0 blitz games) against other chess engine users in yahoo chess rooms.

Q.    What are we not?

A.    We are not programmers, we did not invent anything or wrote the programs mentioned here ( the credit belong to its authors).  We

are not your friends and most important: we are not your tutors......period. ( Not  playing )

Q.    So, if we are not your friends, then why are we sharing this information?

A.    Very simple, we need some real competition in fast games(1/0).

Q.    Polyglot was not mentioned in the other tutorial, what is polyglot?

A.    Polyglot is some sort of winboard engine emulator. Polyglot lets winboard believe that is a winboard engine,  in reality acts as

the "middle man" between winboard and the UCI engine. Polyglot parses commands back and forth between winboard and the

UCI engine. In short: Polyglot makes possible the use of UCI engines with winboard. Note: Polyglot is a simple yet powerful

program capable of creating books and perhaps some other things, visit the official Polyglot site for a full description of its

capabilities and to learn how to configure it.

Q.    What is the advantage of using polyglot vs. winboard232d adapter ?

A.    The advantage is relative. Winboard232d "talks" to the chessbase GUI which in turn "talks" to the UCI engine. Polyglot

"talks" directly to the UCI engine, eliminating the need for a chessbase GUI. This is very convenient for a fast blitz games like

1/0. For longer games, like 10/0, 8/8 etc, the gain on speed some times does not compensate the loss of the chessbase GUI

        features.

Q.    What are the advantages of using winboard232d and chessbase GUI vs. polyglot?

A.    To name a few: Polyglot does not support book learning, there is no time control (the engine responds base on remaining time),

polyglot does not let you edit the opening book.

Q.    What in the heck is winboard_x?

A.    Winboard_x is an unofficial modification (enhanced for UCI engines) of the original winboard. It was wrote by Alessandro Scotti.

Read the official winboard_x page for a full description of its features. In reality, only the official winboard and polyglot are

needed to run UCI engines, but we use winboard_x instead because of its engine output display and some other nifty features.

Conclusion

Using YtoICS, Winboard_X and polyglot will dramatically enhance your speed for lighting blitz games, but the advantages of this

combination of programs will gradually be reduced as the timer increases.
